OAKLAND -- The count of arbitration eligible players on the Oakland Athletics roster is down to two. The A's have announced one-year deals with outfielder Seth Smith and the newly acquired John Jaso.
Jerry Blevins and Brandon Moss have filed for arbitration and while they are under team control, if they don't come to terms with deals of their own soon, an arbitration court will determine their 2013 salary.
Blevins is under team control until 2015, and the A's have Moss through 2016.
The provisional rosters for the 2013 World Baseball Classic were released on Thursday and only one A's player will be participating in the tournament as of now. That player is left-handed reliever Pedro Figueroa. He will be playing for the Dominican Republic.
Hiro Nakajima decided not to play for Japan because he wants to get accustomed to his new teammates and league during Spring Training. Australian pitchers Grant Balfour and Travis Blackley are also absent from the rosters of team Australia.
In case you were wondering, Yoenis Cespedes couldn't play for Cuba like he did during the previous WBC because he defected from his country to eventually sign with the A's.
The lack of A's players participating in the WBC doesn't have anything to do with the desires of the A's front office. After Nakajima's introductory press conference general manager Billy Beane said he supports the international contest and wouldn't hold back his players if they chose to participate.
