SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers on Friday waived kicker Billy Cundiff, who was signed as insurance when veteran David Akers struggled in the regular season.

Cundiff signed with the 49ers on Jan. 1 after winning a competition against free-agent Justin Medlock. Cundiff then had a competition in practice sessions with Akers to determine who would handle the kicking chores in the 49ers' divisional playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.

Akers won the job, and Cundiff was declared among the 49ers' seven inactive players. Cundiff was waived Friday before the 49ers departed for Atlanta, where they will play the Falcons on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. The 49ers did not announce a corresponding roster move. The club is likely to keep just 52 players on its roster and deactivate only six players for Sunday's game.
