Beede, Arroyo among Giants non-roster invitees

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants announced Tuesday that 21 players will be in camp as non-roster invitees, including several of the organization's top prospects.

Former first-rounder Tyler Beede and hard-throwing right-hander Chase Johnson head a list of seven pitchers who will be in camp. The others are right-handers Sam Coonrod, Vin Mazzaro and Albert Suarez, and lefties Ricky Romero and Braulio Lara. Beede, who posted a 3.97 ERA across two levels last season, was the organization's first pick in the 2014 draft and could break into the big leagues as soon as this season. Johnson had a 2.82 ERA for San Jose and Richmond, striking out 129 batters in 124 2/3 innings and opening a lot of eyes. Coonrod burst on the scene with a 3.14 ERA and gaudy strikeout numbers at Low-A Augusta last season.

Christian Arroyo, one of the top shortstop prospects in the minors, is one of seven infielders invited to camp. Arroyo was in big league camp last year, too, and followed that up by hitting .304 for the San Jose Giants and .308 in the Arizona Fall League. Kyle Blanks is listed as an infielder but the veteran will try to make the club as the fifth outfielder. General manager Bobby Evans has said that the Giants hope to find a second backup infielder from their non-roster list, which also includes former A's middle infielder Grant Green, 2013 second-rounder Ryder Jones, Hak-Ju Lee, Rando Moreno and Ramiro Pena.

The Giants invited just three outfielders to camp: Junior Arias, Gorkys Hernandez and Ryan Lollis, who had a cameo in the big leagues a year ago. Four catchers will join Buster Posey, Andrew Susac and Trevor Brown, led by Aramis Garcia, the organization's top catching prospect. Garcia, a second-rounder in 2014, hit 15 homers and posted a .342 OBP for the San Jose Giants last year. He was in big league camp in 2014. The other catchers invited are veteran George Kottaras, Tyler Ross and Matt Winn.

Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Scottsdale Stadium on Feb. 17. The first full squad workout of the even year is Feb. 23.
