The San Francisco Giants have signed Japanese second baseman Kensuke Tanaka to a minor league contract, according to a report.
John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted that the deal is official on Wednesday night.
Tanaka, 31, was a former teammate of Yu Darvish, who excelled in his first season in Major League Baseball with the Texas Rangers.
Last season with the Nippon-Ham Fighters of the Pacific League, Tanaka hit .300 with three home runs, 14 doubles, three triples and 32 RBI.
The Giants recently gave postseason hero Marco Scutaro a three-year deal, but Tanaka could provide infield depth if he makes the 25-man roster out of spring training.
