Buster Posey won't play for the United States in the World Baseball Classic this spring, according to a report.
A source told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle that Posey will instead stay with the Giants throughout spring training. Posey proved last year that his surgically repaired left ankle could hold up over the course of the regular season and playoffs, but is choosing to play it safe by sticking close to the Giants instead of going into a squat for Team USA.
Posey's teammate Ryan Vogelsong confirmed to CSN's Jaymee Sire that he will be in Team USA's starting rotation, and Schulman reports that left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt will also participate in the WBC for the American team.
Schulman also reports that third baseman and World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval is expected to play for the Venezuelan team, while right-handed reliever Sergio Romo is considering whether or not to play for Mexico.
