Instant Replay: Late surge lifts Kings past Blazers

SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento Kings improved to 3-1 on during the preseason, besting the Portland Trail Blazers (1-2) by a final of 94-90 Saturday night at Sleep Train Arena.

Darren Collison started in the backcourt alongside Rajon Rondo and scored a team-high 18 points in 33 minutes of action. DeMarcus Cousins added 16 points and seven rebounds, while rookie Willie Cauley-Stein grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Portland’s CJ McCollum led all scorers with 30 points in just 26 minutes. Allen Crabbe chipped in 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting before fouling out in the fourth and Al-Farouq Aminu kicked in 12 points and six rebounds in the loss.

STANDOUT PERFORMER: Starting for the injured Damian Lillard, McCollum smoked the Kings for 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting in just 25 minutes of action. The 24-year-old guard might have gone for 50 if this was a regular season game.

TURNING POINT: This was a back and forth affair through three quarters, but the Kings second unit put the game away in the fourth. Sacramento’s bench outscored the Blazers 21-18  in the final frame on their way to the four point victory.

INJURY UPDATE: Rudy Gay was in uniform, but sat out the game for Sacramento. The Blazers were without the services of Damian Lillard (left ankle), Gerald Henderson (left hip), Maurice Harkless (concussion) and Cliff Alexander (left knee). 

WHAT'S NEXT: The Kings travel to Las Vegas on Tuesday for their annual matchup with the Lakers in Sin City. They wrap up their preseason schedule on Saturday in Kentucky against the New Orleans Pelicans at Rupp Arena.
