Multiple reports have Alex Smith heading to Kansas City. The trade, once official, will end an up and down tenure for Smith in San Francisco since being the 49ers No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Just 20 years old, Alex Smith led the Utah Utes, under the direction of Urban Myer’s spread offense, to a 35-7 blowout of Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl.

After a dismal 2-14 season, the 49ers made Smith the No. 1 pick of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Smith threw four interceptions in a 9-for-23 performance in a 28-3 loss to Peyton Manning's Colts.

Smith didn't throw his first career touchdown pass until the final game of his first regular season, a 20-17 overtime victory over the Texans. Smith threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Lloyd in the second quarter.

Smith's best game in 2006 was against the Bay rival Raiders. Smith was highly efficient, completing 15 of 19 passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-20 victory.

After Seattle defensive lineman Rocky Bernard crushed Smith for a sack early in a 23-3 49ers defeat in the fourth game of 2007, Smith and then coach Mike Nolan disagreed on the severity of the shoulder injury he sustained from Bernard’s hit. Smith returned, but threw for just one touchdown and three interceptions in three games before he sat out the rest of the 2007 season.

Smith was diagnosed with a broken bone in his shoulder after the final preseason game, was placed on injured reserve, and missed the entire regular season.

Smith's first action after his missed season came in relief of an ineffective Shaun Hill in Houston. Down 21-0 at halftime, Smith threw for three touchdowns in the second half, but fell short of a comeback. The 49ers lost 24-21.

Smith's 49ers career was deemed finished by many after he fumbled on his own trying to scramble from Philadelphia Eagles defenders in 2010. The unassisted mistake was returned for a touchdown, and not soon after, chants for Smith's back-up David Carr echoed around Candlestick Park in front of a national audience on Sunday Night Football.

Smith again injured his shoulder against the Carolina Panthers. Then head coach Mike Singletary gave Troy Smith some starts at quarterback until Smith was healthy enough to play again.

Smith led the 49ers to a crushing victory over the Cardinals, but was as good as gone. Donning a San Diego Padres hat in post game interviews, Smith wouldn't say where he wanted to be the next season, but his body language and attire suggested anywhere but San Francisco.

Newly-named coach Jim Harbaugh visited Alex Smith and his wife at the hospital when Smith's first child was born prior to the 2011 season. Harbaugh also gave Smith a copy of the team's new playbook. This was a level of trust that no prior coach had given Smith.

Down 23-3 in the fourth quarter, Smith led the 49ers to a 21-point comeback to top the Eagles 24-23, the second game of an eight-win streak. It was arguably Smith's greatest regular season comeback as an NFL quarterback.

Smith created a moment that will live in 49ers folklore forever, throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to Vernon Davis in what many call "The Catch III" in the NFC divisional game at Candlestick Park.The victory sent the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in Harbaugh's first season at the helm.

Smith throws just one incompletion and three touchdowns, finishing with a quarterback rating of 157.1 in a 24-3 victory over the Cardinals on Monday Night Football.

Smith had already thrown a touchdown pass in the game against the Rams, but was injured on a backside hit by Jo-Lonn Dunbar in the first quarter, forcing back-up quarterback Colin Kaepernick into the game which ended in a 24-24 tie.

After Colin Kaepernick excels against the Bears and Saints, Harbaugh decides to keep the second-year quarterback as the 49ers’ starter. Smith isn't happy with the decision, but accepts it.

On Feb. 27, 2012, reports surface saying the 49ers will trade the former No. 1 overall pick to the Kansas City Chiefs. What will be Alex Smith's 49ers legacy?
