Giants notes: Bochy not worried about Bumgarner-Puig

SAN FRANCISCO -- The last time Madison Bumgarner and Yasiel Puig shared the field they nearly came to blows and the Giants suffered a pretty bad loss in the late innings. Bruce Bochy doesn't expect a repeat of that night.

"We're playing the game to win, that's all I'll tell you," Bochy said. "That's where our focus is."

Dave Roberts said something similar about Puig, who is batting cleanup tonight. Bochy was asked several questions about the two, and he said he doesn't expect any pre-game warnings from the umpires tonight. They will surely be on edge, though. All of baseball knows about this feud. What exactly is the problem? Bochy said he wasn't sure.

"It's not the first time I've seen a couple of guys who don't see eye to eye," he said.

As for the rest of tonight's participants, Gorkys Hernandez will hit leadoff against lefty Rich Hill and Gordon Beckham will make his Giants debut. Beckham could start the next two games and he would be eligible for a tiebreaker came with the Cardinals since that's technically a regular season game. Beckham is not, however, eligible for the postseason, and Bochy said he's not sure if Eduardo Nuñez will be back in time.

Nuñez played catch today and he'll run on a treadmill to test his strained hamstring. Bochy was asked if he's confident Nuñez will be ready by Wednesday. "I can't say I'm confident," he said. "'Hopeful' would be the word I would use."

--- The Giants were disappointed by the end of the Cardinals-Reds game last night, but there's nothing they can do. Bochy said he anticipates that particular rule coming up in the offseason. It likely will be changed so that managers don't have to go chasing umpires down a hallway within 10 seconds of a walk-off.

"It's an unfortunate incident, especially in this time in baseball where you're talking about getting it right," Bochy said. "Hey, it happened. We're focused on tonight. It's something you can't control. I think there's always a lesson to be learned, whether it's everyone knowing the ground rules of the (10) second thing. Bryan (Price) did all he could with all that was going on. It's hard to see the left field corner from the dugout there."

--- Who will start Saturday? Bochy said he'll announce that after tonight's game.
